MAINE FINE ART PAINTER

JOHN A. DEHLINGER 1936 – 2003

Born in Grafton, West Virginia to John and Beatrice Shields, John was encouraged by his uncle Arthur Shields a prominent Hollywood portrait painter who gave him his first art lessons at age ten. Growing up and working on German and Pennsylvania Dutch family farms around Philadelphia, John gained a deep appreciation of the land and a love for the outdoors that would nurture his art for decades to come. Joining the Marine Corps after graduating from High School, John served in Japan during the Korean Conflict. While in Japan, he took ten months of instruction in the art of Sumi painting. After his discharge, he attended El Camino College, CA, University of Southern California and Villanova University, PA.  John worked in sales and advertising for a dozen years before moving to Tenants Harbor, Maine in 1973 where he continued his fine art career full time. John worked from his home on Main Street; his studio being a magnet for artists and collectors for almost 30 years.

The vast majority of his works are land or seascapes of St. George, Maine. John was inspired by the things that he saw while exploring the peninsula, perspectives in nature that brought to mind memories and experiences. While his favorite media was Egg Tempera of which he was a master, the artist was well known for his watercolor paintings that captured time and place in such a visually appealing manner.
